I made this cake for Spencer's 26th birthday. Happy birthday Spencer! We ate it with homemade malted vanilla ice cream. Yum!
Chocolate cake is not my favorite, but who am I to deny the birthday boy his request. And as far as chocolate cakes go, this is a good one. The crumb is tender and moist; the flavor is chocolate-y and not overly rich. It's snack-able, and would be a good choice for someone who prefers simple, un-fussy desserts. It's perfect for a small birthday celebration, since it looks adorable with sprinkles on top. My one critique is that I found the frosting's flavor a bit flat. If I make it again, I may add sour cream to the frosting, to cut the sweetness and add tang.
Thanks to mom and Spencer for coming down to Austin for the weekend. Between the birthday cake and tour of barbecue restaurants, we ate well.
